Angkor Wat to Siem Reap Floating Village – What to Expect

A Remarkable Adventure Combining Khmer History and Lakeside Life

Our journey through the Angkor Archaeological Park reveals the impressive wealth and cosmopolitanism of the ancient Khmer Empire. Spanning AD 802-1431, this sophisticated civilization left behind one of history’s most extensive urban settlements.

We then contrast the stone temples from centuries past with the vibrant floating habitats on the nearby Tonlé Sap, learning how lake communities sustain their traditional lifestyles across generations.

  • Roam the intricate sandstone corridors of Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument, and admire its iconic architecture.
  • Marvel at the towering temple mountain Bakong, part of Angkor’s earlier Roluos group, with its richly carved Hindu depictions.
  • Cruise through Kampong Phluk’s stilted fishing village, where life not only floats on the lake itself but even beneath it in flooded forests.
  • Hop aboard a traditional wooden boat to navigate through these unique floating worlds, getting an up-close glimpse of lake life.

Angkor Wat to Siem Reap Floating Village – Itinerary

8:20 AM – Pickup

  • Our guide and driver will pick you up from the hotel lobby at 8:20 AM sharp. Please be on time as we have a full day of exploration ahead.

9:00 AM – Arrive at Angkor Wat

  • We’ll arrive at the iconic Angkor Wat just as the temple complex opens for the day. Get your first glimpse of the massive stone towers rising from the green landscape, mirrored perfectly in the long rectangular pools leading up to the entrance.
  • Our guide will give you insight into the significance of the bas reliefs and intricate architectural details as we take our time wandering through.

11:30 AM – Bakong Temple

  • After getting an eyeful at Angkor Wat, we’ll take a short drive over to the Roluos Group of temples. Here we’ll stop first at Bakong, an impressive temple mountain encapsulating a giant sandstone prasat.
  • Winding staircases invite you to climb higher for panoramic views from the very top. Marvel at the carved sculptures of Hindu deities and get lost wandering the dimly lit interior passageways.

13:00 AM – Prasat Lolei

  • You must be hungry after exploring those ancient ruins in the morning heat! We’ll take a break at a shaded rest area where you can enjoy a packed picnic lunch featuring local Khmer dishes like amok curry and sticky rice. Recharge before we continue our journey into the countryside.
  • Next we’ll carry onto Prasat Lolei, a quaint but wonderfully preserved temple with intricate carvings throughout the sandstone structures. Built in the 9th century, this lesser-visited site allows you to experience the ancient temples without the crowds.

15:00 PM – Kampong Phluk Floating Village

  • In the afternoon, we’ll head out of Siem Reap and into the floating villages that live much of their lives right on the Tonle Sap lake itself. After a scenic drive through rural villages and miles of vibrant green rice fields, we’ll arrive at the boat dock where we’ll take a ride out to Kampong Phluk.
  • Witness the wooden homes, stores, restaurants, and more that fluctuate with the seasons, rising and falling with the lake level. Local boat drivers will take us through the flooded forest into the mangrove trees to get an upclose look at this completely unique way of life.
  • We’ll take some time to wander the boardwalks of Kampong Phluk, interacting with locals and perhaps picking up some handicrafts or snacks before we board our boat back around 6 PM. Relax and take in the views of the cambodian countryside across the lake waters.

6:30 PM – Back to the City

  • We’ll land back at the boat dock and climb in our air-conditioned van to head back to Siem Reap, refreshed from a day out on the lake and ready to unwind back at your hotel. We expect to have you back around 6:30 to 7 PM after a full day of adventure at Angkor Wat and beyond.
