What to Expect

Exploring Angkor temples: The first stop on the tour will be at the Angkor Thom complex. You will be able to explore the wonderful splendor of Bayon and the world-famous Ta Prohm (Tomb Raider) Temple once you pass through these enormous fortifications.

After that, satiate your appetite by dining on some delectable Cambodian cuisine at one of the numerous local eateries located within the Angkor Complex.

Your next two stops will be at the massive and breathtaking Angkor Wat, followed by a sensational view of the setting sun from the peak of Phnom Bakheng. Because this tour visits some of the largest temples in the Angkor Complex, including Phnom Bakheng, which has a max capacity of only 300 visitors, we limit the total number of temples we visit so that we may spend sufficient time at each amazing location.

We’ll start walking back to town once the sun has fallen (which should be around 6:30 p.m.) and your legs have started to feel tired from the hike.

The multitude of serene and happy stone faces that can be found on the Bayon’s various towers, which project from the top terrace and cluster around the monument’s central peak, is without a doubt the most distinguishing feature of this historic structure.

One of the temples in Angkor that receives the greatest number of visitors is Ta Prohm. At Ta Prohm, scenes from the movie Tomb Raider, which was released in 2001 and starred Angelina Jolie as the character Lara Croft, were filmed.

In one scene, she walks past the towers in the southeast corner, continues along a ruinous corbelled roof section, walks past the iconic tree that has grown out of the enclosure, and then picks a jasmine flower in front of the other iconic tree that frames the enclosure doorway in the central enclosure. Ta Prohm was used as the setting for all of these scenes.

➤ What exactly was the purpose of Ta Prohm?

The Buddhist monastery that is today known as Ta Prohm was originally referred to as Rajavihara, which literally means “Monastery of the King.” Construction on the temple began in 1186 and continued until it was completed.

The temple was named after Jayavarman VII’s mother when it was constructed. It is one of the few temples in the Angkor region that has an inscription, and among the information it provides, you may learn about the people who lived at the temple as well as those who were dependent on it.

It’s a little bit of a maze, so you might find yourself going in the wrong direction or even going backward sometimes, but that’s okay. The vast majority of temples, including this one, have display boards that advise different walking routes, and so does this particular temple.

The highlights of this location include the narrow vertical bas-reliefs that can be found near the entrances, the smiling faces that can be found on the western gate, the lintels and pediments, the overall greatness and appearance, and the incredible trees with their roots that look like reptiles that are taking over the ruins.

Outstanding Tour and Guide.
Because this was our first time seeing Angkor Wat, our tour guide Chean and our driver went above and above to ensure that we had a memorable experience. My experience with Chean as a tour guide ranks him among the most knowledgeable and enthusiastic I’ve ever had. It is incredible how well he understands the history of Cambodia and Angkor, as well as religion, politics, architecture, and ethnography. His English is a very top-notch. And on top of that, he is a very humorous man. I have complete confidence in recommending him to any traveler whose primary language is English. Because Chean was our guide, we were able to gain an incredible amount of information about the temples and the Angkor complex!
